Steeplechases are races across open fields. Maryland specializes in steeplechases over timber - hard fences - that are akin to actual elements in the real world. These bring an additional layer of thrill, and risk, to the races. Below you will find years of history, with each of the major Maryland races since 2019.
All photos were taken in the field with no remotes, and no lens larger than 85 mm. There is not a better way to express the power of these horses, or the excitement of these races, without showing them up close. I work with race officials on placement and safety, and often discuss with jockeys how they approach the various fences.
