In early 2019, in the deepest cold of an otherwise warm winter, a federal detention center in Brooklyn went without heat and basic necessities. In an era of declining civility, the simple truth that how we care about those in our charge reflects upon our morality as a nation and a people remains unchanged. And people cared, and people protested in the cold, and the situation that should never have been true was improved.
